There are so many beautiful things going on with paper cutting right now. It has inspired me to incorporate more paper cutting into my artist books! This DIY paper-cutting book pattern builds a series of pop-up horses that are supported by an accordion book structure. This project is a beginner paper cutting project but requires the use of a sharp blade so keep that in mind if choosing this project for younger ages.

Testers have enjoyed the book and comment that it was “fun", "easy to follow" and "looks really fancy.” The average time to finish the project was two hours.

The illustrations for the book are from drawings I made of horses combined with scans of one of my relief prints on handmade string paper and some of my abaca eastern handmade papers. The cover is a scan of one of my linocut images printed on handmade western paper. The book measures approximately 3 by 4.75 inches (7.5 x 12cm) when closed and opens up to 26 inches (66cm).

The illustrated directions take you, step-by-step through the process of making this three-dimensional book. No special knowledge or experience is needed.

The pattern kit includes 11- A4, letter size JPEG files in two PDFs:
• 4 pages of step-by-step illustrated directions
• 3 pages of the illustrated book to print out and assemble

A reminder that this is not an actual assembled book but a book to print out and put together. Users print out the files and with a few simple tools (a craft knife or scalpel; pencil, glue, and a bone folder or spoon) to assemble the book. The only materials you will need are compressed board (like the back of a sketchbook).
